Dr. Sofía Amador is an experienced educator and consultant in K-12 education in Costa Rica and Latin America. She has also been a founding member and Board of Director member for several non-profit and Christian organizations. She holds a BA in Teaching English as a Foreign Language from the University of Costa Rica, a master’s degree in Education and a master’s degree in Educational Leadership from Framingham State University in Massachusetts and a Doctorate in Education from La Salle University in Costa Rica.
Throughout her career, Dr. Amador has made her mission to help faculty and administrators develop their leadership roles and empower them into adopting effective teaching practices in support of student success. She has taken advantage of the various positions she has held as Curriculum & Accreditation Director, Principal, and General Director to become an influential leader and an agent of change among the people she works with. Sofía’s areas of expertise include:
- Curriculum writing and alignment to the organization’s vision, mission, and academic standards
- Adoption of data-based inquiry processes, through which an institution engages in strategic planning, as the foundation of continuous improvement
- Design and implementation of teacher training programs that promote collaboration and action research among faculty
- Coaching BOD members in managing educational organizations
- Coaching school leaders in the areas of leadership, staff development, supervision, and retention.
As a consultant, Dr. Amador founded EducArte International in 2012, an educational consulting business, through which she has had the privilege of working in several countries in Latin America.
Sofía strongly believes that to prepare the student of the 21st Century, schools and leaders must build networks of collaboration and service. Her strong belief in service and collaboration motivated her to become a volunteer for Cognia (former AdvancED). She has participated in Review Teams for Colombia, México, El Salvador, Honduras, Dominican Republic, and Costa Rica. These experiences have provided her with a solid background in the areas of teaching and learning, leadership and strategic planning, as well as a range of strategies to help schools meet their needs.
Currently, Dr. Amador is the Curriculum/Professional Development and Accreditation Director for Schools of Excellence, a private school system in San José, Costa Rica. In that position, she coordinates the curriculum implementation process, the professional development plan and the continuous improvement process in the three schools that are part of the system.
Sofía lives in Heredia, Costa Rica, with her husband Alex. They have four adult children with two living in Costa Rica and two, in the United States.
